Jorge Mario Bergoglio was born in Buenos Aires (Argentina) on December 17, 1936.<\/p>\n\n

On December 13, 1969, he received the priestly ordination from Archbishop Ram\u00f3n Jos\u00e9 Castellano.<\/p>\n\n

In 1998 he was appointed Archbishop of Buenos Aires and in 2001, St. John Paul II named him Cardinal.<\/p>\n\n

In 2002 he declined the appointment as President of the Argentine Bishops’ Conference, but three years later he is re-elected and later reconfirmed for another three years in 2008.<\/p>\n\n

In 2005, he participated to the conclave in which Benedict XVI was elected.<\/p>\n\n

On March 13, 2013 he was elected successor of Benedict XVI. He is the first Pope from the American continent and the first Spanish-speaking. <\/p>\n\n
