In 1948 obtained a doctorate in Theology.\nIn 1958 was appointed bishop, in 1964 was appointed Archbishop of Krakow by Paul VI, who made him cardinal in 1967.\nOn October 16, 1978 he was elected Pontiff of the Catholic Church, with the name of John Paul II.\nHe participated to the II Vatican Council with an important contribution to the drafting of the constitution Gaudium et spes.\nHe made many apostolic trips inside and outside Italy. In 1985 he began the World Youth Days. In 1994 he started the world meeting of families.\nHis pontificate has been one of the longest in the history of the Church.\nJohn Paul II died on April 2, 2005.
